A NEW MODEL FOR PRAIRIE RESTORATION
The Plains Restoration Project exists to restore native prairie acres across the Plains by connecting conservation-minded supporters with farmers who are ready to steward the land.
Through a partnership-based model, supporters sponsor acres that farmers convert from row crop production back to native prairie. These restored acres provide habitat for wildlife, support pollinators, improve soil health, and strengthen the ecosystems that sustain the land, water, and air we all depend on.
By combining the commitment of conservation supporters with the expertise of farmers, prairie restoration becomes both practical and scalable.
North America’s prairie ecosystem is one of the most diverse and productive landscapes on earth. Native grasses and wildflowers support pollinators, provide habitat for wildlife, and play a vital role in soil health and water quality.
Yet today, less than 4% of the original tallgrass prairie remains.
As prairie landscapes have been converted to other uses, many of the ecosystems that once flourished there have declined (significantly?).
Restoring prairie is one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen these ecosystems—and to ensure that future generations experience the richness of native landscapes.
WHY PRAIRIE RESTORATION MATTERS
We Work With the People Who Know the Land
Farmers and land stewards play a critical role in the future of prairie ecosystems.
Many farmers care deeply about the long-term health of their land and want opportunities to restore prairie acres within their operations. However, converting productive farmland back to native prairie can carry financial risk.
The Plains Restoration Project helps bridge that gap by connecting farmers with supporters who are willing to sponsor restoration acres. These partnerships allow farmers to steward restored prairie while maintaining a sustainable operation.
We Are a Community of Prairie Stewards
The Plains Restoration Project brings together people who believe caring for the land is a shared responsibility.
Our community includes:
Conservation-minded supporters
Farmers and land stewards
Wildlife and habitat advocates
People who value native plants, pollinators, and prairie ecosystems
Together, they form a network of partners working toward the same goal: restoring prairie landscapes across the Plains.
We Connect People to the Land
For many people who care deeply about conservation, the challenge is simple: they want to help restore natural landscapes but don’t have access to land where restoration can happen.
At the same time, many farmers are open to restoring prairie but lack the financial support needed to convert acreage away from traditional production.
The Plains Restoration Project was created to connect these two groups.
By forming partnerships between supporters and farmers, prairie restoration becomes possible in places where it otherwise might not happen.
RESTORING THE PRAIRIE ONE ACRE AT A TIME.
WITH YOUR SUPPORT THE PLAINS RESTORATION PROJECT IS
When supporters sponsor acres and farmers steward the land, the prairie begins to return.
Native grasses and wildflowers take root.
Pollinators and wildlife find habitat.
Soil grows healthier.
Water gets cleaner.
Ecosystems strengthen.
Each restored acre contributes to a larger transformation—one that reconnects people with the land and restores ecosystems across the Plains.
Together, these partnerships are bringing the prairie back.
YOU CANIf you care about wildlife, native plants, pollinators, and the health of the land, you can help restore native prairie acres.
Become part of a growing community working with farmers to bring prairie ecosystems back to the landscape.
